Chiropractic and Sciatica
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a diagnosis comprised of many symptoms including pain that travels down the buttock region/down the back of one leg, aching, numbness, burning, pins and needles/tingling, or an electric shock sensation. Common causes of Sciatica include misalignment of the lumbar spinal joint s or sacro-iliac joints, herniated or bulging discs, pregnancy, or other pathologies. This can cause pinching/impingement of the sciatic nerve which exits in the gluteal region and down the back of the leg, leading to a variety of intermittent or consistent symptoms.
How Can Chiropractic Help Sciatica?
A Chiropractor will first perform a thorough examination and review your medical history to determine the underlying cause of your sciatica. This may involve ordering other diagnostic tests. Once a diagnosis has been made, the Chiropractor will develop a treatment plan for you. Chiropractic may give you sciatic pain relief or alleviate other sciatic symptoms by spinal adjustments to realign your joints, and Active Release Technique or nerve flossing to alleviate any adhesions or tension on the sciatic nerve.
