PUBLIC INQUIRY

In 1978, over three percent of the population of New Zealand signed a petition asking the government to recognize chiropractors as equal partner to the medical profession. On March 5, 1978 an inquiry started that took over 18 months to investigate the chiropractic profession. The New Zealand commission of inquiry report is now recognized throughout the world as an authoritative statement on the value and safety of chiropractic.

During the inquiry, many research studies were looked at from both sides. The following points are only some of the conclusions made by the inquiry.

  • "The conspicuous lack of evidence that chiropractors cause harm or allow harm to occur can be taken to mean only one thing: That chiropractors have on the whole an impressive safety record"
  • "The training of medical doctors does not equip them to know enough about chiropractic to advise patients about it."
  • "Organized medicine's opposition is based on ignorance, coupled with misinformation about modern chiropractic theory and practice."
  • "Chiropractic treatments are safe and effective"

Since the day of the inquiry, many of the above facts have not changed. Most medical schools still do not teach about chiropractic. In addition, there is still no scientific study proving a high risk to benefit ratio chiropractic adjustments.
