EXERCISE OR CHIROPRACTIC? Can regular exercise substitute for regular adjustments? This is a very common question and misconception. Adjustments correct Subluxations. Subluxations are misalignments of the spine that cause pressure on spinal nerves. Subluxations not only may cause pain and discomfort of your muscles and spine but they also put pressure on spinal nerves and eventually affect your total health. Regular exercise can strengthen the muscles and decrease their stiffness and may eventually help with some spinal pain, but there is no exercise that can align the spine and remove pressure from your nerves. Unfortunately pressure on nerves does not cause pain most of the time. Since most nerves carry information to different organs of the body, when affected instead of causing pain, they cause abnormal function. For example if the nerve that carries information to the stomach is affected, eventually it can cause increase or decrease in the production of stomach acid which may lead to many cause problems in the digestive system. It only takes a very small amount of pressure (10mm Hg) for 15 minutes on an individual nerve to decrease its conductance by 40%. Imagine not removing this pressure with an adjustment for weeks or months or even years. If the pressure is left on the nerves for a long time, it may never recover to its original state. While exercise is very beneficial to your health and should be done regularly, it can not substitute for regular adjustments. |
